Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola
Leases teaching hospital to varsity for MBBS clinical
The Federal Government has renovated 83 internal road projects in various federal tertiary institutions in the country.
Speaking at the handover of a 2.75km (asphalt overlay) internal road in the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), yesterday, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said the ministry intervened in 64 internal road projects in various federal tertiary institutions and handed over 46 as at March 2022.
“We have another 18 ready to be handed over, while attending to 19 in similar institutions across the country, making them 83,” he said.
The 2.75km road links UNILORIN main campus to the institution’s teaching hospital to ease vehicular movement along the axis.
Represented at the event by the Controller, Federal Ministry of Works, Kwara State, Lasisi Rafiu, the minister described the project as an investment in education.
“Today, we converge at UNILORIN Main Campus to hand over an important asset, 2.75km road rehabilitated/reconstructed by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing on behalf of the Federal Government.
“While it is true that a lot of work needs to be done in many sectors of our national life, including education, the Muhammadu Buhari government has stepped up to lead the process of getting that work done.”
At the event, the Vice Chancellor (VC), UNILORIN, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, said the road was pivotal to the movement of staff and students between the main campus and the teaching hospital through the College of Health Sciences.
Represented by Director, Academic Planning, Prof. Gideon Arosanyin, the VC appreciated the Federal Government, saying the project was completed since February 2022.
IN the same vein, the Federal Government has leased the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina State, to management of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), for the conduct of clinicals by its MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) students.
VC of the state-owned university, Prof. Sanusi Mamman, in a chat with newsmen, yesterday, said the lease of the hospital, formerly known as Federal Medical Centre (FMC), would last 15 years.
Mamman noted that the lease was made possible after UMYU management, in collaboration with some elders in the state, met with the Minster of Health in Abuja, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to him, before now, there had been agitation from management of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) that it wanted to use the teaching hospital for the same purpose.
