FG targets 95% digital literacy by 2030

Launches National Digital Literacy Framework

The Federal Government has unveiled a National Digital Literacy Framework aimed at ensuring that 95 per cent of Nigerians become digital literate by 2030.

Speaking at the launch of the framework, yesterday, in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. William Alo, noted that the framework sets a digital literacy and skills agenda for Nigeria by providing a clear and consistent definition of digital literacy for the purpose of building curricula, modules and programmes.

He stated that the African continent only participates as consumers of technologies and products developed in Europe and America during the first and second industrial revolutions.

He, however, said the fourth industrial revolution has presented a unique opportunity for Africa to be at the forefront of global revolution by leveraging its human resource for innovative use of digital technologies to address some of the biggest global challenges.

According to him, Nigeria has an advantage far above any other country to utilise its abundant human resources. Also speaking, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Abubakar Inuwa, said the digital literacy framework is geared towards making Nigeria a digital hub for digital skills.

He noted that the framework has set the stage for the country to review all the curriculum starting from the kindergarten to university to ensure that every Nigerian have access to digital literacy.

Inuwa expressed optimism that digital literacy would help the country to develop skills and achieve inclusive participation, adding that the agency has developed Digital Gender Inclusion to ensure that Nigerian women are not left behind.
