Imo govt clarifies engaging firm for revenue generation

Imo State government has explained that it decided to engage the services of a consultancy firm to infuse fresh ideas into revenue generation to meet the state’s expenditure and other needs.

Commissioner for Finance and Economy, Dr. Doris Uzoka Anite, stated this in Owerri at the weekend during her visit to the Chairman of Imo Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Emeka Udegbulam.

She disclosed that Governor Hope Uzodimma had supported the engagement of a revenue collection consultant to be in tune with the global best practices in tax administration.

Anite said the government was determined to boost and facilitate the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and explore other potential sources of revenue generation.

She disclosed that the mandate of the firm include identifying and recommending opportunities for improved revenue base for revenue collection, as well as recommending the global best practices in tax administration and revenue collection.

The firm will also be responsible for reducing leakages in the state’s revenue, streamlining and harmonising the IIRS revenue collection methods, enhancing professionalism and customer services, as well as reduce the burden of payments and multiple taxation on the IIRS.

Responding, Udegbulam, assured of the readiness of IIRS under his watch to always support and cooperate with the state government in realising its Three Rs mantra, just as he expressed the readiness of the agency to realise the revenue targets and explore other potential in the state.
