A 46-year-old woman from Benin, Juliet Ebahi Ahiante, is urgently seeking N40 million for a polycystic kidney transplant, a procedure that could save her life.
For nearly nine years, Ahiante endured silent suffering, misdiagnoses, and neglect, unaware that she was battling polycystic kidney disease. Both her kidneys are severely damaged, a condition that has now also affected her liver.
Her health is rapidly deteriorating. She struggles to walk, eat, and breathe properly, and lives in constant pain. Doctors at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, have stated that she requires a kidney transplant within three months to survive. Without it, she risks heart failure, brain damage, or death.
Ahiante’s hope lies in a sibling who has volunteered to donate a kidney. However, the cost of the surgery, treatment, and hospital stay for both her and the donor amounts to N40 million, a sum she cannot afford.
Speaking on her condition, Ahiante said, “I was told that I have three months to get a kidney transplant, but a month has already passed. I don’t mind my face being everywhere as long as I can get help. I want urgent help.”
Ahiante, a private teacher, shared the emotional toll of her illness. “I am not married, and I don’t have children. Men thought I was pregnant because of my swelling stomach, so no one approached me. They all left me because of my condition,” she lamented.
