Senior pastor, Word of Power Gospel Church International, Apostle Festus Alilu, has apologised to the lead pastor of Master Place International, Warri, Delta State, Korede Komaiya, following a controversial video he posted online.
Convener of the Concerned Christian Youth Forum, James Paul Adama, who confirmed the development on Monday, described it as a positive step toward reconciliation.
Alilu was reportedly arrested by police officers mobilised from Delta State after he posted a video on his official Facebook page in which he accused Komaiya of misleading church members with fabricated prosperity teachings.
In his letter of apology dated March 23, 2025 sighted by The Guardian, the cleric expressed regret over the comments he made against Komaiya.
“I write to express my sincere and unreserved apologies for a viral video I posted on my Facebook page on March 8, 2025, where I criticised your style of preaching.
I regret the offensive content of the video and the negative effect on your reputation, congregation, and the entire body of Christ.
“I have removed the video from my Facebook page and have also posted an apology video on the same platform. I humbly request your forgiveness and understanding so we can put this behind us and focus on our shared commitment to spreading the gospel,” he said.
The forum, which played a role in resolving the issue, described the development as a step toward reconciliation.
The group also used the opportunity to caution against defamatory remarks and cyberbullying.
The forum said: “We believe that the Christian faith and its leaders should be respected and protected against defamation and cyberbullying.
“Do not defame or tarnish the reputation of anyone while criticising their actions. Remember, you are only sharing your perception or opinion and this must be done within the confines of the law.
“Criminal offence isn’t just against the victim but against the entire state. So do not come up with lame excuses that the victim is a Christian or Pastor and ought to have forgiven. Let this apology serve as a reminder that differences of opinion do not justify hateful speech or malicious behaviour.
“The matter has been withdrawn, and we are grateful to all those involved for finding a peaceful resolution.”
