The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into an incident involving its personnel and civilians along the Nsukka–Igbo Eze South Road in Enugu State.

This follows the circulation of a video on social media showing an encounter between soldiers deployed to Igbo Eze South Local Government Area and some residents during what the military described as a routine security check.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Lt. Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Division stressed that while routine checks are critical to maintaining security in the region, any allegations of misconduct are taken seriously.

“A thorough investigation has been instituted to establish the facts surrounding the incident, and the outcome will be made public.

“If found guilty, the personnel involved will face appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with military regulations,” the statement read.

The Army further assured the public that it remains committed to carrying out its constitutional duties with professionalism, while strictly adhering to the Nigerian Army’s Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct.

The Division also emphasised its commitment to transparency, accountability, and fostering positive civil-military relations, acknowledging the role of the public and the media in drawing attention to the matter.

“We appreciate the public’s vigilance and the media’s role in bringing the issue to our attention,” the statement added.

The Nigerian Army said it has intensified efforts to address public concerns over alleged human rights violations during security operations, assuming reforms aimed at improving trust between soldiers and civilians.
