BEDC rejects Ondo govt takeover claims, urges respect for regulations

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and its subsidiary, BEDC Electricity Ondo Limited (BEOL), on Friday strongly condemned an alleged plan by the Ondo Government to assume control of electricity distribution operations within the state.

Reacting to a statement allegedly released from the office of the Special Assistant to the Ondo State Governor on Power, BEDC described the move as illegal, provocative, and disruptive to ongoing partnerships.

In a statement issued by the Chief Revenue Cycle Manager of BEDC Electricity Plc, Mr. Collins Igwe, on Friday in Benin, BEDC clarified that under the Electricity Act 2023, states may regulate their markets but not assume control of distribution operations.

The company stated that any unilateral takeover would contradict the joint communiqué issued after a strategic meeting between BEDC/BEOL and the Ondo State Government on power challenges.

“Any such move undermines the spirit of collaboration and mutual understanding agreed upon to resolve electricity issues in the state.

“We have a legal mandate to operate in Ondo. This attempted encroachment is unacceptable,” Igwe said.

Mr. Igwe noted that the challenges affecting electricity supply in Ondo were national in scope, adding that BEDC, through BEOL, was committed to long-term solutions.

“We are not opposed to partnerships, but any approach must respect legal processes and agreements made in good faith,” he added.

He emphasised that the communiqué, which was duly signed by both parties, clearly set a path for joint solutions and the formation of a power supply committee.

The committee, he noted, was meant to address electricity access in unserved and underserved communities through a mutually agreeable and sustainable framework.

BEDC warned that any unilateral takeover or interference in its operations would amount to a breach of agreement and disruption of power distribution services in the state.

The company added that it remained the licensed operator in the state and will protect its assets in accordance with Nigerian laws and regulatory guidelines.

“We call on those currently attempting to interfere with our infrastructure to cease immediately to avoid legal consequences,” Igwe said.

Igwe also urged the public to disregard the controversial publication, describing it as misleading, unauthorised, and harmful to ongoing collaborative efforts.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to serving the people of Ondo with improved electricity services while prioritising transparency, legal compliance, and community engagement.
