Boy needs N1.6 m for heart surgery
WHEN little Eyitayo Agbo came into the lobby room of The Guardian on Tuesday, protectively held in his father’s arms, you could feel the frail nature of the child who desperately needs help, having developed a hole in the heart at birth.
The two-year-old, who was diagnosed of congenital heart disease in 2013, at the Department of Pediatrics and Clinic Health Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) needs an estimated sum of N1.6million, including travel costs for surgical correction of the defect.
Narrating his ordeal, Eyitayo’s father, Mr. Segun Agbo told The Guardian: “After he was born, a few days before his naming ceremony, we noticed he was breathing fast and so we asked people what could be the cause and they kept saying there was no problem. After about a month, we noticed he wasn’t even growing in size and just remained the same, we were also told it could be his stature.”
“Along the line, he fell ill and we took him to the hospital and we were told that he had breathing problem and so we got him some drugs. He could not sleep at night, always crying and so we brought him back to the hospital. Initially, we went to the health centre and then the doctor transferred us to LASUTH. When we got there and after series of tests were done, we discovered he had a hole in his heart.”
“That was when we had to go around looking for the money. We were asked to pay N1.6 million to take him to India for the surgery. When we left the hospital, we went to the Commissioner for Health’s office in Alausa and we were told to come back. Nothing came out of it.”
He further said: “Well meaning Nigerians, relatives and friends have tried to help but we are yet to complete the amount. However, since 2013 when we were given N1.6 million bill, we don’t know if it would have increased by now. We need help to get my son back to a healthy state because he has suffered a lot.
