A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Halimat Olubukola Jimoh, has supported over 50 pregnant women in Lugbe, Abuja, through her MamaSafe initiative, which aims to improve maternal health and promote safe childbirth.

The outreach, organised in partnership with The Midwife Next Door Foundation, took place at a Primary Health Care Centre in Lugbe and provided lifesaving supplies and educational support to expectant mothers.

According to Jimoh, the MamaSafe initiative comprises three key components: distributing clean birth kits to expectant mothers, equipping clinics with emergency maternal care kits, and launching a digital health support community.

The clean birth kits contained essential items such as maternity pads, cord clamps, gloves, and diapers, all aimed at reducing the risk of infection and complications during childbirth.

The programme also featured a session on “Recognising Danger Signs in Pregnancy and Childbirth and What to Do,” facilitated by maternal health educator, Mrs Cecilia Samuel. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and received practical guidance on safer pregnancy practices.

Jimoh, a trained midwife and maternal health advocate, said that despite still serving as a corps member, she believed every birth should be a celebration.

“Service to humanity should not wait for tomorrow. It begins with what we can do today,” she said. Some beneficiaries described the support as timely, given the current economic challenges. A man who accompanied his pregnant wife to the clinic expressed appreciation, saying: “Fathers also carry a lot of stress during this time, and this initiative is a support for us as well.”
