Somolu Local Council has launched an innovative tech initiative to offer 40 outstanding youths a chance to develop their tech skills and transform their futures.
Speaking at a press conference, the Chairman, Somolu Local Council, AbdulHamed Salawu, said that the initiative, established under the Somolu Tech Intervention (SoTech), is aimed at creating digital literacy programmes for indigents youths.

Salawu, represented by his Vice, Lateeef Ekiyemi-Odujobi, stressed that the programme demonstrates the council’s commitment to creating a customised policy for human capital development of indigent youths.
He said: “Following the achievements of previous tech programmes like GoTech, ICT/TECH, #TechSpark2024, which focused on teens and children, the initiative- ‘youth digital pathway to sustainable development’ sets to encourage Somolu youths to harness opportunities in information technology.
In his remarks, Special Adviser to the Chairman on ICT, Fola Mohammed, explained that the council will be partnering with tech shepherd to provide scholarships for youths in the areas of front-end web development, digital marketing, and UI/UX design.
He announced that there will be future programmes to elevate 40 youths trained over the time, with scholarships and brand new laptops to aid their development in the tech industry.
Mohammed said the council has also partnered with NitHub of UNILAG to create a KidsTech club for children, adding that “Attempts have also been made to input the initiative to secondary schools curriculum in the local government and we are currently working with authorities to ensure this fully implemented.”
A beneficiary of GoTech, a previous initiative by the council, Yusuf Shakirudeen, expressed gratitude to the chairman for investing in technological opportunities to prepare the youths ahead of future tech opportunities.
He noted that his participation in the previous tech programmes has benefited him greatly as he is currently on internship with a tech company in the country.
