The EFCC has secured the conviction of one Samuel Oliveth Louis for impersonation and cyber-related fraud before a Federal High Court sitting Lagos.
Louis was convicted by Justice D. I Dipeolu after pleading guilty to a one-count charge bordering on impersonation.
The EFCC had alleged that the defendant, sometime in September 2024 in Lagos, falsely presented himself as a white man named “Eric Rolly” via his Telegram account, with the intent to deceive and procure financial benefits.
According to the prosecution, the act contravenes Section 22(3) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
Upon his arraignment, Louis pleaded guilty to the charge.
Following the plea, prosecution counsel, C.C. Okezie, reviewed the facts of the case through an investigating officer, Tina Okorodas, and tendered documentary evidence before the court.
The prosecution subsequently urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant in line with the law.
Delivering judgment, Justice Dipeolu found Louis guilty as charged and proceeded to convict him.
The court thereafter sentenced him to four months’ imprisonment, with an option of three months’ community service. The judge directed that the community service be supervised by the EFCC in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
