The Agu-Umabor, Eha-Alumonah community in Nsukka Local Council of Enugu State has cried out over a threatening erosion site on the only road connecting the area with the rest of the state.
The community appealed to the Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah to intervene and save residents from being cut off from other parts of the state.
The people of the community had in the past repeatedly drawn the attention of government authorities to the devastating gully erosion threatening the road.
However, no form of relief has come to the community, prompting the latest outcry.
In a statement signed by the President of Agu Umabor Elites Group, Emeka Abonyi, the people appealed to the state government and Nsukka Local Council to commence immediate remedial work on the road.
“This SOS became very imperative as the condition of the road has worsened to such a level that our people are on the verge of being cut off completely from the rest of the state.
“This is the only access road that connects our people to the rest of the state. We are an agrarian community producing food items in commercial quantities, but the road network has remained a major challenge,” Abonyi said.
The community also lamented that criminal elements were exploiting the bad state of the road to wreak havoc in the area, stressing that urgent attention was needed as the road continued to deteriorate.
“We are appealing that the government should come to our aid through an intervention fund to save us from agony,” the statement said.
Similarly, an indigene of the area and member of the group, Ugwuanyi Collins, lamented that the community, regarded as one of the food baskets of Nsukka Local Council, was only remembered during election campaigns.
He said political leaders often visited the community with promises that were never fulfilled.
Ugwuanyi recalled how Agu Umabor elites appealed to the administration of former governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi when the damage to the road had not reached its current level.
