A fire outbreak on Tuesday night destroyed properties worth millions of naira at a shopping complex located beside the Akin-Alamu Building on Papa Alakia Isebo Road in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The incident, which occurred around 11:22 p.m. on June 1, 2025, affected five out of the 10 shops in the complex.Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Ibadan. He disclosed that no casualties were recorded.
According to Akinwande, the fire was reported by a resident, Mr Olarewaju, via telephone. Firefighters, led by CFS Adesina Olusoji, were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived to find several shops engulfed in flames. The team acted swiftly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties.
“The fire was successfully extinguished and salvage operations were carried out. Five out of 10 shops were affected, but the agency’s personnel managed to save properties worth millions of naira,” Akinwande stated.
He attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical surge, which ignited nearby combustible materials, resulting in the blaze. Akinwande used the occasion to emphasise the importance of switching off and unplugging electrical appliances when not in use, especially after closing business premises, to prevent fire outbreaks.
