Foundation seeks govt’s assistance for widows

CHINWE Bode-Akinwande Foundation (CBA), an NGO committed to alleviating the plight of widows and indigent children, has called on governments at federal and state levels to come to the aid of this vulnerable group in the society.

The foundation made this appeal when it hosted widows to a capacity building and free health check programme.

The foundation with headquarters in Lagos has a five-point agenda of assisting widows. This agenda includes capacity building, self-employment scheme, health intervention, nutrition aid and basic education for children.

At the event, which held at Bright and Success Nursery and Primary School, Ikotun, Lagos, participants were counseled on business and skill development, health check and also offered free food and clothes.

Mrs. Bode-Akinwande was represented at the occasion by Mr. Henry Ebem, one of the directors Board of Trustees of CBA. He said that the CBA had a mandate of reaching out to the indigent in the society.

Ebem added that Ikotun was the second community to be visited by the Foundation, disclosing that during such visits they provided medical assistance and other basic needs like food and clothes.

According to him, CBA also guides the women in their choice of career and empowers them so that they can be self-reliant to take care of their families.

His words: “In the next five years, I see the foundation partnering many NGOs and the United Nations. In Nigeria nobody is talking about the International Day for Widows, which is June 23. We would ensure that this day is made relevant.”

He said: “What you think is not much is enough to build or start up a career for a widow to fend for her family and to fend for herself.”

Top bank executive, Chinwe Bode-Akinwande, is the brain behind the CBA Foundation. She established the foundation to further pursue her passion of assisting the needy in the society.
