A non-profit organisation, Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation (VOHF), has carried out a sensitisation campaign in the Owerri metropolis to raise awareness about the dangers of anaemia.
The initiative is part of the organisation’s commitment to promoting health awareness in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria.
During the event, the VOHF Imo State team visited the Owerri Municipal Health Centre, where they educated and sensitised new and expectant mothers on anemia, its prevention, and treatment. Donations were also made to the mothers, who expressed their gratitude to the foundation.
The foundation’s coordinator, Victoria Oyiya, highlighted that anaemia is a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with over 50 per cent of pregnant women affected. She noted that the condition contributes to morbidity and mortality among pregnant and lactating mothers.
“Anaemia is a condition where there is low hemoglobin and red blood cells in the body,” she explained. “These cells are responsible for carrying oxygen around the body.”
Oyiya further stated that the organisation has teams across various Nigerian states, aiming to promote health through community outreach to schools, health centres, communities, and organisations.
“We also help connect individuals with health care professionals nationwide,” she said. “Our active social media presence is used for health awareness and education. Our focus is on illness prevention, healthy living, and preventing disease complications.”
She added that VOHF has successfully organised outreaches across the country, addressing issues such as malaria prevention, menstrual hygiene, and drug abuse, impacting hundreds of lives.
