Four dead, three injured in truck accident on Second Niger Bridge

Four people have died and three others are receiving treatment at St. Rebecca Hospital, Asaba, following a fatal road accident on the Second Niger Bridge in Delta State.

The crash, which occurred yesterday, involved a cement-laden truck and two smaller vehicles.

Eyewitnesses said the truck was speeding as it approached the bridge before the driver lost control. The vehicle toppled, crushing the two cars.

“We saw the truck carrying cement, and it was on high speed, trying to navigate through the bridge but couldn’t control it. It eventually fell and crushed two vehicles. Some people died instantly, and others were seriously injured,” an eyewitness told reporters.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were quickly deployed to the scene. The Delta State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Frederick Ogidan, confirmed the incident and attributed the crash to overspeeding.

“Four persons were confirmed dead at the scene. The vehicle involved was a BUA cement truck, not a Dangote truck as some initially speculated. The victims were trapped in the vehicles due to the impact, and our tow truck had to be deployed for rescue operations,” Ogidan said.

He described the incident as unfortunate, stressing that reckless driving on well-maintained roads poses grave risks.

The FRSC urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, particularly on major routes such as the Second Niger Bridge, to prevent further tragedies.
