Home fetes children with disability, pledges more support

THE Vice Chairman, Management Committee of the Lagos Cheshire Home and Services (LCHS) for young people living with disabilities, Engr. Olugbenga Olabenjo has pledged to continue to invest in the lives of the disabled in the society.

  Engr. Olabenjo made the pledge at the Home’s annual New Year party for its residents in Lagos. 

   According to him, LCHS is a home with the primary purpose of caring for people with physical disabilities. He said the whole idea behind the home is to help children with disabilities develop to a point where they can live independently.  

  He further explained that the home is like a transit to life. “It is a transition to build the young people with disabilities psychologically, physically and possibly equip them with some skills with which they can live independently in the larger society”, he stated.   

  Speaking to the participants that included young people with disabilities from Lagos Cheshire Home and other Homes and Institutions, as well as some invited guests, Miss Tope Akinyele, an LCHS resident, harped on the importance of inclusive education and its benefits to students with and without disabilities.

  According to her, the importance of inclusive education on the part of the students with disabilities is that it gives room for collaboration, encourages mix-thinking, interaction, high expectation and participation. 

  “On the part of the students without disabilities, it helps them to learn more about students with disabilities and assess individual differences for better relationship”, she explained. 

  Counseling on interpersonal relationship with Persons with Disabilities, Miss Dina Adetutu, a student of Yaba College of Technology Secondary School said individuals without disabilities should tolerate and treat people with disabilities (PWDs) equally without discriminating against them. 

  She also advised individuals without disabilities to show love to PWD’s by supporting them and also giving cash and material things in order for them to meet up with their daily needs.
