The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu, to revitalise the moribund human rights desks in police commands nationwide.
The group also called on him to confront the entrenched challenges of corruption, impunity and lack of professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, noting that addressing these issues would require more than public pledges.
HURIWA advised the new IGP to take decisive steps to tackle internal divisions within the Force and restore public trust, which it said had been eroded by misconduct and criminal behaviour among some officers.
“The IGP should clean up police barracks and stations across the country and develop plans to establish modern and hygienic facilities so that officers can work in decent conditions.
