Imo State commissioner of police, Aboki Danjuma, on Tuesday evening arrested seven police officers over their alleged involvement in infractions ranging from extortion and misconduct to brutality.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the command, Henry Okoye, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Danjuma arrested them during his unscheduled statewide inspection of the checkpoints following reports by the public on the unruly and unprofessional conduct of the officers, stating that appropriate disciplinary measures had been initiated against them.
It read: “In a renewed effort to entrench professionalism, discipline, and public confidence in police operations, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, embarked on an operational tour of police checkpoints across the state — including those along the Owerri–Onitsha, Owerri–Port Harcourt, and Owerri–Umuahia highways.
“Following the inspection, seven (7) personnel were identified and arrested for various infractions. Appropriate disciplinary measures have been initiated in line with established procedures, and further updates will be communicated in due course.
“The inspection followed reports and complaints from members of the public concerning alleged acts of extortion, harassment, and other forms of unprofessional conduct by some police personnel on field duties.”
He disclosed that during the tour, the commissioner addressed the officers on the need to uphold the core values of modern policing, bordering on discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights.
He warned that any officer found engaging in extortion or intimidation of members of the public would face strict disciplinary measures accordingly, including dismissal and possible prosecution.
The statement disclosed that the police boss interacted with commuters, urging them not to surrender their phones for unauthorised searches, maintaining that it was “unlawful, unethical, and intolerable.”
The statement said the police commissioner used the occasion to strengthen and promote public accountability and confidence, issuing the emergency contact numbers of the X-Squad and Complaint Response Unit (CRU), urging the public to report any officer who engages in misconduct, promising that it would be treated with confidentiality.
He promised that the command, under Danjuma’s watch, would ensure the restoration of “public trust, building a police force anchored on integrity, justice, and service to the people.”
In another development, the command, on Tuesday, organised intensive musketry training for about 200 personnel, reaffirming zero tolerance for the misuse of firearms.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Okoye, it was in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun.
The refresher training exposed personnel to officers from tactical units and divisions across the state.
The training, held at the headquarters of the command, Okoye disclosed, “focused on improving firearms handling, strengthening weapon safety, and enforcing operational discipline. It was designed to enhance the competence and readiness of personnel to effectively tackle evolving security threats across Imo State.”
Addressing the participants, the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, urged them to take it seriously and apply the knowledge received.
The resource person was Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Abdullahi Wase, 2i/c Commander, 18 PMF Owerri, who drilled the participants on the intensive modules, including tactical shooting techniques, close-quarter drills, judgment-based use-of-force scenarios, rifle assembly and disassembly, and justification for the use of firearms in line with Force Order 237.
Senior officers at the opening session included the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hammajoda Barka (Administration/Finance); Assistant Commissioner of Police Michael Abattam, Assistant Commissioner of Police Linus Nwaiwu (Area Commander, Owerri Metro), Assistant Commissioner of Police Muhammad Gana (Head, IGP X-Squad); Assistant Commissioner of Police Danasumi Ibrahim (Commander, 18 PMF), Assistant Commissioner of Police Dan Iruakazi (Commander, 64 PMF Orlu), and other key management officers of the command.
