All Kara (cattle) markets across the Kwara South Senatorial District have been shut indefinitely as part of measures to curb rising insecurity in the zone.

The decision was jointly announced by the Forum of Seven Local Government Chairmen in the district, who said the closure takes effect from Friday, September 19, 2025, and will remain in place until further notice.

In a statement co-signed by the chairmen and security heads, the councils also restricted operating hours for other produce markets, directing that they close by 6:00 p.m. on market days.

According to the chairmen, the move is aimed at reducing the “fearless and devastating strikes by bandits” and is part of a wider effort to strengthen the security architecture of the district.

“This collective decision is a proactive step taken to address emerging security concerns and ensure the safety of residents, traders, and commuters within the district,” the statement read.

The chairmen said the decision followed extensive stakeholder engagement and security reviews, stressing that the markets would be reopened once a conducive environment is guaranteed.

“While the invading criminals have been operationally decimated in the last few weeks, clean-up operations by the military and hybrid operatives are still ongoing,” they noted.

They acknowledged the economic implications of the move but insisted that protecting lives and property must take priority.

“We have chosen to prioritise the safety of lives and property, adhering to long-term coordinated and structured security advisories over and above short-term inconveniences,” they said, assuring residents that the councils, state government, and security agencies are working to restore lasting peace to the area.

The forum appealed to residents and traders to cooperate fully with the government and security agencies to achieve a secure and peaceful environment.
