The National Association of Nurses and Midwifery, Kano state chapter, has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state government to respond to its demands.
The health workers under the services of the state government vowed to embark on industrial action if its requests are not met at the expiration of the ultimatum.
The Nurses’ ultimatum comes when medical doctors under the Kano Doctors Association suspended its two days warning strike.
Chairman of the Nurses, Ibrahim Maikarfi, told journalists on Thursday that members were compelled to issue the ultimatum after months of formal requests to concern authorities with no positive response.
According to Maikarfi, the Nurses have been compelled to undergo undue discomfort and untold neglect while being denied their entitlements.
Part of the outstanding demands, Maikarfi stressed, include a review of hazard allowance, salary review, and lopsidedness in the appointment of directors at the Ministry of health and hospital management board against the Nurses.
Meanwhile, the secretary of Kano State Doctors, Anas Idris Shanono, revealed the need to call off the strike was reached after an emergency meeting of the association.
Shannon said the industrial action was suspended until the end of October 2024 after actions and promises of the government were reviewed.
The doctors also protested an inadequate number of medical personnel in the state’s hospitals with only 600 doctors serving more than 20 million people.
They also protested the state government’s failure to pay their post-COVID-19 hazard allowances two years after the termination of the pandemic.
