The kidnappers of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, Rector of Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi, Etsako East Local Council of Edo State, have demanded a N200 million ransom for his release.

Sources revealed that the abductors contacted the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, led by Bishop Gabriel Dunia, on Monday evening, requesting the payment.

“The kidnappers asked the diocese to pay N200 million if they want the priest freed,” the source said, noting that the abductors ended the call after making their demand, awaiting a response.

As of yesterday, negotiations had not yet commenced, with uncertainty over whether the diocese would engage in ransom discussions.

Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Auchi, confirmed the demand in a text message, stating, “It is true.”

Oyode was abducted on Sunday around 7:00 p.m. when gunmen attacked the seminary, initially seizing two students.

Oyode reportedly persuaded the kidnappers to release the students and take him instead. Following his plea, the gunmen released the students and took the priest into the bush.

The Diocese of Auchi has called for prayers for Fr. Oyode’s safe release.
