Kuteb-Tiv coalition dismisses critics, insists group is not a fan club

The leadership of the Kuteb/Tiv Coalition in Taraba State has declared that the group is not a mere “fan club” but a platform of strategic thinkers committed to advancing the political interests of historically marginalised communities in the state.

In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Yakubu Tor-Agbidye and Ambassador Rikwense Muri, the coalition responded sharply to recent remarks by Tiv political appointees and stakeholders who publicly distanced themselves from the group.

The coalition accused the Tiv appointees of either misunderstanding or deliberately misrepresenting its mission, stressing that its objective is to unite the Kuteb and Tiv ethnic groups to secure a stronger political voice in Taraba.

“Political appointments do not equate to political empowerment,” the statement read. “The true empowerment of a people lies in institutions, negotiation frameworks, representation, equity in land rights, and guaranteed security of lives and property.”

The group condemned what it described as “poverty of thought” exhibited in the press conference held by the Tiv appointees, accusing them of exaggerating their influence and resisting alternative viewpoints.

Defending its constitutional right to organise, the coalition rejected claims that it is merely an “Abuja-based” group detached from grassroots realities. It argued that many crucial decisions affecting both the Kuteb and Tiv people have historically been made in the nation’s capital.

“If the coalition is in Abuja, at least it is thinking. At least it is acting. At least it will never apologise for existing,” the statement declared.

Responding to the appointees’ decision to distance themselves from the coalition, the group said bluntly that it neither sought nor required their endorsement.

“The Kuteb/Tiv Coalition is not a fan club; it is a platform of strategic thinkers, concerned elders, youths, and visionaries who understand the need to organise beyond stomach infrastructure and gratitude politics,” the coalition stated.

While acknowledging Governor Agbu Kefas’s efforts in governance, the coalition warned against what it described as “perpetual gratitude politics,” insisting that inclusion and good governance are rights, not favours.

“History will not remember those who bowed and clapped. It will remember those who organised, negotiated, and spoke truth to power,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its resolve, the coalition stressed that its mission is neither tribal nor rebellious but driven by strategic necessity. It challenged its critics to present a superior plan for advancing the interests of the Tiv and Kuteb communities.

“Coalitions are not crimes,” the statement noted. “If these stakeholders have a better plan, let them unveil it now. Otherwise, let them allow serious minds to work.”

The coalition then called for continued political engagement and solidarity among the Kuteb and Tiv people in Taraba State.
