Kwara seals residential building for open defecation

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed a residential building in Ilorin over the unsafe disposal of human waste which violates the environmental law.

The building at Alagbede Compound, Ita-Elefun, Adabata Area in Ilorin was sealed off at about 2:00 pm on Friday following reports that human excreta from the property was being openly discharged due to a defective soakaway system.

According to KWEPA, the action was triggered by a complaint from a member of the community who raised concerns that occupants of the building expose human excreta to the atmosphere.

Speaking during the enforcement exercise, Sanitarian Abigail Are, who represented the agency’s Acting General Manager, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho Adeola, said the act was dangerous to the health of inhabitants of the area.

Are noted that the decision to seal off the house was to enforce compliance with the environmental laws and prevent the community from epidemic due to the carelessness of the occupants.

She said the act of the occupants is liable to cause infectious diseases such as cholera and violates the provision of health and environmental law.

Are urged the public to complement government efforts in the fight against open defecation to prevent outbreaks of diseases.
