
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the agency responsible for coordinating emergencies/disasters in the state, has revealed that 1,094 emergency incidents were recorded in the state between January and August 2024, with 121 incidents specifically recorded in the month of August 2024.

In a statement on Thursday, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, disclosed that the 121 incidents recorded in August are the lowest in a month when compared to 141 in January, 156 in February, 148 in March, 132 in April, 147 in May, 126 in June, and 123 incidents in July.
It was also stated that a total of 7,536 incidents were attended to by LASEMA between 1st June 2019 and 31st August 2024.
Analysis of the 121 emergency incidents attended in August 2024 by the Agency reveals that the Road Accident category ranks highest with a record of 39 incidents, comprising 36 Accidents and 3 Breakdowns, followed by the Truck/Tanker category with 34 incidents, including 27 Accidents, 1 Fallen Container, 4 Broken-Down Trucks, and 2 Fallen Truck/Tankers. In third place are the Fire Disaster and Medical Emergencies categories, each with 19 incidents.
The 19 incidents in the Fire Disaster category include 17 Fire Outbreaks, 1 Tanker/Truck Fire, and 1 Vehicular/BRT Fire, while the Medical Emergency category includes the recovery of 1 Dead Body and 18 others, along with 7 various types of other incidents, including 1 incident each from the Building Collapse, Gas Explosion, and Train Crash categories, making up the 121 incidents attended to by the Agency in August 2024.

Analysis of Local Government Emergency Trends in August revealed that, out of the 20 Local Governments in Lagos State, Alimosho LGA recorded the highest number of incidents with 20 out of the 121 incidents recorded in Lagos State during this period, followed by Eti-Osa LGA with 17 incidents in second place, Kosofe LGA with 13 incidents in third place, and Ikeja LGA with 12 incidents in fourth place. Lagos Mainland and Surulere LGAs recorded 7 incidents each in fifth place, while Shomolu and Ibeju-Lekki LGAs recorded 6 incidents each in sixth place. Mushin and Amuwo-Odofin recorded 5 incidents each in seventh place, while Lagos Island, Oshodi-Isolo, and Apapa LGAs recorded 4 incidents each, occupying the eighth position. Ikorodu and Ojo LGAs recorded 3 incidents each in the ninth position. Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area ranks tenth with 2 incidents, Badagry, Epe LGAs, and Outside Lagos boundary interventions recorded 1 incident each in the eleventh position, while Agege and Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Areas recorded no incidents during the period under review.
So far this year, the Agency has attended to a total of 1,094 incidents from 1st January to 31st August 2024. Evaluation of the 2024 Monthly Emergency Trends reveals that the highest number of incidents in a month was recorded in February when the Agency attended to 156 incidents, followed by 148 incidents in March and 147 incidents in May, while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in August 2024, when the Agency attended to 121 incidents.

Analysis of the 1,094 incidents attended so far this year, according to categorization, shows that the Truck/Tanker category ranks highest with 369 incidents in the last eight months. This number includes 244 Truck Accidents, 7 Fallen Containers, 100 Broken Down Trucks, 3 Stuck Trucks, and 15 Fallen Truck/Tankers.
The Road Accidents category ranks second highest with 252 incidents, comprising 232 Vehicle Accidents, 18 Breakdowns, and 2 others. The Fire Disaster category ranks third with 198 incidents, including 183 Fire Outbreaks, 6 Tanker/Truck Fires, and 9 Cars/BRTs, while the Train Accident category recorded the least number, with 2 incidents so far this year.
Data on Emergencies in Local Government reveals that Alimosho LGA, with the largest landmass and dense population, records the highest number of incidents so far in 2024 with 173 out of the 1,094 incidents, followed by 115 incidents in Ikeja and 109 incidents in Eti-Osa, while Badagry Local Government Area recorded the lowest with 2 emergency incidents.
Yearly Emergency Trends in the last six years of Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu’s administration show that LASEMA has attended to a total of 7,536 incidents in the last six years. This includes 513 incidents between 1st June to 31st December 2019, 1,043 from 1st January to 31st December 2020, 1,743 incidents in 2021, 1,682 incidents in 2022, 1,461 incidents in 2023, and 1,094 incidents recorded so far between 1st January and 31st August 2024.
The Yearly Emergency Trends Data reveals that emergency incidents peaked in 2021 with 1,743 incidents, dropped to 1,682 incidents in 2022, then 1,461 incidents in 2023, with a further decline as the Governor’s administration continues to equip the Agency to meet present-day challenges in emergency/disaster management, with incessant training, skills, and cutting-edge technology that is successfully moving Lagos State away from emergency response to Disaster Risk Reduction in line with international best practices.
