A roadside hawker has been crushed to death in a tragic road accident in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State, raising fresh concerns over road safety and roadside trading in the state.

The fatal crash involved a Lexus Jeep with registration number SMK 674 HY, which struck the victim, an adult male, leading to his immediate death at the scene.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the incident occurred on Sunday and prompted a swift response from its officials.

In a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, the victim died instantly due to the severity of the impact.

LASTMA officials were said to have quickly secured the accident scene and evacuated the remains of the deceased from the carriageway to ensure the free flow of traffic.

Police officers attached to the Ketu Division subsequently conveyed the body to the Badagry Mortuary for further necessary procedures, while authorities began preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In a related development, the agency confirmed that seven passengers were injured in a separate accident at the Ogudu inward toll gate in Lagos, involving a Mazda commercial bus with registration number MUS 231 YA and a Lexus Jeep with registration number FKJ 23 HL.

Emergency responders, including officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service and operatives of the Ogudu Police Division, were said to have intervened promptly, evacuating the injured victims to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

All vehicles involved in both incidents have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Reacting to the incidents, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and maintain safe speeds, especially during late-night hours when visibility and alertness may be reduced.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring effective traffic management across the state, as concerns continue to grow over reckless driving and the risks faced by roadside traders on busy highways in Lagos.
