Man to get 12 strokes of cane for stealing N224,000 plastic chairs
A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna yesterday ordered that 24-year-old Edward Williams receive 12 strokes of the cane for stealing 12 plastic chairs valued at N224,000.
Williams, a resident of Ungwan Yelwa Television in Kaduna, was convicted after pleading guilty to criminal trespass and theft charges.
Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel delivered the sentence, noting that while the punishment was lenient, it would have been more severe had the convict not pleaded guilty, which saved the court the burden of a lengthy prosecution.
During the proceedings, Prosecutor Inspector Chidi Leo informed the court that the complainant, Sarah Nehemiah of Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, had reported the incident at Sabon Police Station on October 29. Leo explained that around 6:00 a.m., Williams allegedly broke into Nehemiah’s shop by entering through the ceiling and stealing the 12 plastic chairs.
According to Leo, Williams was apprehended by a security guard and handed over to the police, where he confessed to the crime.
Investigations by the police led to the recovery of the stolen chairs.
The prosecutor stated that Williams’ actions violated the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
