The Chairman of Mushin Local Government in Lagos, Emmanuel Bamgboye, has directed the committee in charge of elections at the popular Aguiyi Ironsi Spare Parts Market in the Ladipo area of Mushin to allow traders with both old and new identity cards to operate in the market. He also ordered the immediate reversal of recent amendments made to the constitution by the incumbent chairman of the market association.
Bamgboye issued these directives in an effort to resolve the leadership crisis that has been affecting the market. T
the directives followed a meeting between the Executive Chairman, the management of Mushin Local Government, key stakeholders, and the Executive Council of the market, where all the aggrieved parties presented their grievances against the current leadership.
The meeting, held on September 24, 2024, in the chairman’s office, involved Bamgboye advising the leaders and members of various groups in the market to prepare for the upcoming election of the market executives and to embrace peace.
After hearing their submissions and deliberating on the issues, Bamgboye directed that the market association’s constitution be amended to extend the tenure of the executives to three years, replacing the current two-year term. He also insisted that Lagos indigenes should be included among the market association’s executives and that the Local Government should review the constitution to ensure clarity and understanding among all traders.
“A new Electoral Committee should be established for the market association, comprising nine members,” Bamgboye stated. He outlined that the committee would include four members from the current Chairman of the Market Association, three from the opposing faction, and two representatives from the Local Government.
Bamgboye further directed that traders with both old and new identity cards be allowed to operate in the market and that the recent amendments made by the incumbent chairman should be reversed. He emphasised the need for transparency, accountability, and objectivity in the electoral process, with one of the Local Government’s representatives leading the Electoral Committee.
The chairman also ordered that the names of all contestants and members nominated by the different groups to serve on the Electoral Committee be submitted to the appropriate authority. Additionally, the electoral process should include shop-to-shop enumeration for the election.
Following the chairman’s directives, all parties at the meeting, including stakeholders, agreed to comply and follow the guidelines to ensure a peaceful election and a smooth transition of power to the new executives.
Council officials and stakeholders from Aguiyi Ironsi Spare Parts Market were also in attendance at the meeting.
