The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has honoured Corps Assistant II Abubakar Abdulkadir Mayos for an extraordinary act of honesty. His recent decision to return a lost bag containing $500, 300 Saudi Riyal, and other valuables worth approximately N850,000 in total has earned him praise, admiration, and a well-deserved promotion.
The bag belonged to Maimuna Salihu, an intending pilgrim from Taraba State who was scheduled to be airlifted for the 2025 Hajj from the Yola International Airport. Mayos, upon discovering the lost property, promptly ensured its return, demonstrating unwavering integrity in a moment where many others might have chosen personal gain.
Addressing officers and men of the Corps during the ceremony, senior officials lauded Mayos for not only upholding the Corps’ values but for elevating its image in the eyes of the public. “In a world where shortcuts are tempting and appearances can be deceiving, CAII Abubakar Abdulkadir Mayos has shown what it means to live by principle,” the statement read.
His exemplary action was met with heartfelt gratitude and admiration from colleagues, superiors, and the larger community. The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, PhD, Mni, OFR, approved Mayos’ immediate promotion from Corps Assistant II to Corps Assistant I, describing his conduct as “a beacon of light in times of moral uncertainty.”
“Honesty is not just about telling the truth,” said one of the speakers at the event, “it is about living it—especially when no one is watching. CAII Mayos has done exactly that.”
Dr. Audi, known for his commitment to integrity and excellence, was also commended for his leadership and for recognizing such rare acts of virtue. “By rewarding honesty, the Commandant General is not only acknowledging a single act,” the speaker noted, “he is fostering a culture of integrity, trust, and accountability throughout the Corps.”
