The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has stressed the urgent need for collective effort among government, stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies to combat food insecurity in Nigeria.
This call to action was made at the third edition of the command’s bi-monthly Public Relations Clinic, which convened to discuss effective strategies for enhancing food security.
The event, themed “Enhancing Food Security in Nigeria: The Roles of Government, Stakeholders and Law Enforcement Agencies, and the Contributions of the Agro Rangers Unit of the NSCDC in Lagos State,” brought together key players in the agricultural sector.
Representing the Commissioner of Agriculture, Lagos State, Mr Oyebola Akinola underscored the importance of collaboration in mitigating food insecurity. He highlighted the Ministry’s achievements under Commissioner Abisola Olusanya’s leadership and acknowledged the significant contributions of the Agro Rangers in ensuring food security within the state.
Deputy Commandant of Corps Eunice Morenike Agboola delivered the keynote address, standing in for State Commandant Mr Adedotun Keshinro. She outlined the crucial role played by the Agro Rangers in bolstering food security across Lagos communities.
Guest speaker Mr Ramon Oseni, a U.S. Army veteran, emphasised the necessity of prioritising the public good over sectional interests in pursuing food security in Nigeria.
He urged the government to focus on serving the wider population rather than catering to the needs of select groups.
Oseni also drew attention to the vital role of security agencies – the army and police – in maintaining national stability. He stressed that these personnel must be adequately fed to effectively protect the country, noting that they often lack sufficient food supplies.
To address food preservation challenges, Oseni advocated for a reliable electricity supply to store perishable goods efficiently. He further called for improved communication between the government and citizens regarding genetically modified organisms (GMO) crops and mechanised farming practices.
Tajudeen Bello of Metro Life Animal commended the Agro Rangers for their exceptional mediation skills and community-focused approach. Bello, who has collaborated with the Agro Rangers for nine months, praised their effectiveness in resolving disputes and fostering peace within rural areas.
In his closing remarks, NSCDC Public Relations Officer Oluwaseun Abolurin expressed gratitude for the government’s support thus far. He appealed for increased funding and resource allocation to empower the Agro Rangers and enable them to effectively serve Nigeria’s agricultural communities.
