Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged media practitioners, particularly those at the community outfits, to focus more on the rural communities to attract government attention.
Speaking at a seminar organized by Delta Community Newspaper Publishers in Asaba, the State capital, Oborevwori stated that the government would be more abreast with the happenings in the rural areas if Community Newspapers beam its search light on it.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, said that community newspaper publishers are the closest to the grassroots, and as such would make a much impact when they report more of local events in their domains, rather than competing with national media.
“We are talking about underreporting everywhere. If all the things that the government does in every community is reported, every community would be reported on ultimately. That is the work of community media, because national media will be selective, and many communities will not be reported,” he emphasized.
Oborevwori said the community media would not be taken for granted because they are very vital in the scheme of things, and pledged his continued support in the course of performing their jobs.
Commissioner for Works(Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the government would assist in the training of Media personnel for optimal delivery.
Represented by a director in the ministry, Mr Harold Oji, Aniagwu said the government is ready to work with all critical stakeholders in delivering good governance to the people.
Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Community Newspapers, and the convener of the seminar, Prince Eromosere Orhomonokpaye commended Oborevwori for giving the seminar green light, saying that the essence was not only to retrain members on the rudiments of reporting but also on how to go about their daily reporting of events in their various communities.
