The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ogun State Command, on Tuesday, cautioned its armed personnel against the misuse of firearms and negligence in the discharge of their duties.

The command equally called on its officers to remain disciplined, vigilant, and professional in the course of performing their duties, particularly in the face of the prevailing security challenges bedevilling the nation.

The State’s Commandant, Remilekun Ekundayo, disclosed this at a general meeting of the Armed Squad Unit held at the Command Headquarters Conference Hall, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Ekundayo, who was represented by the Corps’ Deputy Commandant, Rafiu Popoola, warned that failure by any personnel to use firearms properly and neglect their duties would attract stiffer disciplinary actions.

She called on senior officers, supervisors, and team leaders drawn from various critical national assets and infrastructure posts across the state, emphasising the importance of alertness in the handling of firearms, citing officers who lost their lives in Edo State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

The commandant emphasised the need for strict adherence to the rules of engagement and urged all personnel to remain resolute and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in their various assignments.

She commended the leadership of the Armed Squad Unit and acknowledged the unwavering commitment of armed personnel across tactical units, praising their relentless efforts in maintaining peace and security throughout the state.

Ekundayo, therefore, announced that armed personnel would continue to undergo regular retraining programmes aimed at improving both physical and mental preparedness for modern security challenges as part of efforts to strengthen operational duties.

Highlights of the discussions at the meeting included proper handover and takeover procedures, operational effectiveness, avoidance of financial and emotional distractions, safe weapon handling, respect for human rights, esprit de corps, and confidentiality in operations.
