The Olubadan-in-Council on Tuesday held its first official meeting with the Olubadan-elect, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, marking his formal return to Ibadan and setting the stage for the highly anticipated coronation ceremony.
The significant meeting, which lasted two hours—from 11:25 a.m. to 1:20 p.m.—took place at Oba Ladoja’s residence on Ondo Street, Bodija, Ibadan. It was the first time in over two and a half months that the council members were meeting with the former Oyo State governor since his emergence as the next Olubadan.
In a moment of solemnity, the council observed a one-minute silence in honour of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the late Olubadan, who joined his ancestors on Monday, July 7, during Ladoja’s absence from the city.
Led by Otun Balogun, Oba Kola Adegbola, the council congratulated Oba Ladoja on his emergence and expressed high public expectations for his reign.
“We are committed to supporting you. We pray that God gives you the unction to function effectively. We are ready to serve in whatever capacity—before, during, and after your coronation,” the council affirmed.
Discussions during the meeting centred on cultural and ceremonial preparations for the coronation. With an unprecedented crowd anticipated, both the council and Oba Ladoja stressed the importance of meticulous planning to ensure a successful and historic event.
In his remarks, Oba Ladoja expressed gratitude to the council for their unanimous endorsement of his candidacy, which had occurred during his absence.
“As Olubadan, I promise to run a collective and inclusive administration. Your voices will be heard, and your counsel valued,” he assured.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders, including Governor Seyi Makinde, the Aare of Ibadanland, and the Oluwo Afobaje, in finalising the coronation arrangements.
“Now that I’m back, we can meet with His Excellency to agree on the details. Once that is done, a formal announcement of the date will follow,” the monarch-elect explained.
He further pledged that the Olubadan-in-Council would be involved at every stage of the planning process, with a nominee from the council expected to join the State Coronation Committee for formal approval.
The meeting ended on a cordial note, with the traditional rulers sharing lunch. High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, the Ekarun Balogun, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the council.
Among the council members present were Oba Kola Adegbola (Otun Balogun), Oba Olubunmi Isioye-Dada (Osi Balogun), Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi (Asipa Olubadan), Oba Abiodun Azeez (Asipa Balogun), Oba Hamidu Ajibade (Ekerin Olubadan), Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin (Ekerin Balogun), and High Chief Sharafadeen Alli (Ekarun Balogun).
Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Balogun of Ibadanland, was absent but sent in his apologies.
Several dignitaries and well-wishers also paid courtesy visits to Oba Ladoja during the day, including Elder Wole Oyelese, a former minister; Senator Teslim Folarin, the APC gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections; prominent chiefs, businessmen, and community leaders.
