ROTARY Club of Oregun felicitated with the Rotary International, District 9110 as it celebrated the ‘Rotary Day’ on Monday to mark the 110th ‘birthday’ of Rotary International.

 The President of the Club (Rotary, Oregun), Henry Kingsley Ibhade said the celebration of 110th birthday of Rotary International, which was founded on February 23, 1905 by the Chicago lawyer, Paul Harris for professionals and business leaders with diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships, was in line with the Club’s commitment to celebrate Rotary International in Nigeria.

  According to him, “The name ‘Rotary’ came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.”  

    He added that Rotary International with 34,000 worldwide network clubs, is working together across the globe deploring time, talent, treasure to the promotion of peace, fighting diseases, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies.

    Going back memory lane, Chief Olatunde Ishola Aluko, the second President of the Club in Oregun, disclosed that the Rotary Club of Oregun was formally admitted into the Rotary Internationally on February 23, 1985.

  Coincidentally, the Rotary Club of Oregun is also marking its 30th Anniversary celebration. 

 The past President of the Club and the Chairman, 30th Anniversary Committee, Arinze Okamelu had announced a week long activities to mark the anniversary, which is to commence with the club organizing ‘Oregun Health Day’ in partnership with Mecure Healthcare Limited at the Olu of Oregun’s Palace ground, Oregun Community, Ikeja.

  This is to be followed with the commissioning of water borehole donated to Oregun Community. There is also a career/vocational talk at Oregun Senior High School as well as donation of some educational materials to the school today (Wednesday, February 25.)   

  Other activities lined up for the event include, Special Thursday Fellowship with the Group Chairman of Celtron Group and Deputy President of the Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Prince Dapo Adelegan at Lagos Airport Hotel, Awolowo Way Ikeja;  “Road Safety Talk,” in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) slated for Friday at Ojota Park, Oregun. This will be followed by the donation of clothes, foodstuffs and toiletries to Ozanam Home (a home for orphans, abandoned children/displaced youths and adults) at Agidingbi, Ikeja. 

  Grand finale of the anniversary will take place at Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja under the chairmanship of Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe amongst others events.
