Plateau files charges against five suspects over Angwa-Rukuba killings

Plateau

Plateau State Government has filed criminal charges against five suspects arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in connection with the March 2026 killings in Angwa-Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area.

The suspects, who were arrested between April 3 and April 10, 2026, are expected to be arraigned on April 23.

They were charged with offences including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and terrorism-related offences.

According to the charge sheet filed by the State Attorney General, Philemon Daffi, the defendants allegedly conspired to carry out attacks in Angwa-Rukuba by planning, facilitating, and financing the operation.

The court documents further allege that the attack, carried out on March 28, 2025, led to the deaths of over 30 people in Jos North LGA.

One of the suspects, Adamu Isa Alhassan, was also accused of involvement in a series of coordinated attacks across communities in Riyom and Jos South local government areas between 2025 and early 2026, which reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities.

Several other individuals mentioned in the charges are said to be at large.

The offences are said to contravene provisions of the Penal Code Law of Plateau State, 2017.

The development comes weeks after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Plateau State, where he assured affected communities that justice would be served and pledged stronger federal support for peace in the state.

The March 28, 2025 attack in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs, which left at least 30 people dead including children, had sparked widespread outrage across the country and renewed calls for improved security in rural communities.

Following the incident, there were also public debates over whether state-sponsored cultural events should proceed amid mourning.

However, Governor Caleb Mutfwang maintained that suspending such activities would amount to surrendering to the intentions of the attackers, insisting that life must continue despite the tragedy.

He also reiterated his position that the violence on the Plateau goes beyond communal conflict, describing it as systematic and calling for broader attention to the pattern of attacks.
