Plateau Killings: Committee visits affected areas to prevent future attacks

The 10-man Fact-Finding Committee set up by the Plateau State Government to look into the incessant violence and killings by terrorists and bandits has concluded its assignment.

The committee was inaugurated on May 20, 2025, by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the attacks since 2001 and provide necessary recommendations to prevent such unwarranted attacks in the future.

The Fact-Finding Committee is headed by Major-General Nicholas Rogers (rtd) as the Chairman, with nine other members.

During its assignment, the committee visited the most frequently attacked local government areas of Wase, Mangu, Bokkos, Riyom, Bassa, Kanam, and other local governments to identify the immediate and remote causes of the heinous attacks.

On arrival at the separate local government areas, the committee members paid courtesy calls on the various council chairmen before interacting with traditional rulers, heads of security agencies, religious and community leaders, as well as other critical stakeholders in the peace-building process.

Responding separately, the council chairmen highlighted the security challenges they faced in their communities, adding that they were unsure how to address the insecurity.

Chairman of the committee, General Rogers, stated that the committee had conducted extensive fact-finding, which would enable the state government to make informed decisions to curb the persistent attacks in the state.

Having visited all 17 local government areas in the state, stakeholders are confident that the initiatives would resolve the lingering insecurity in the state and ensure justice for the affected communities.
