The deceased, Tunji Jimoh, reportedly died under questionable circumstances while in detention at the state police command in Ilorin.
According to information gathered, Jimoh, who was from the Erubu/Asunnara community, died last Friday.
A police source (names withheld) hinted that Jimoh owed a friend, whose brother is a police officer, N220,000, over which he was arrested by a team of police officers that included the creditor’s brother.
“After his arrest, Jimoh was brought to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) at the command headquarters in Ilorin on Friday,” the source said.
Another family source added: “He was refused bail, and we had to leave the station very late on Friday, only to be called on Saturday morning that he had died in detention.”
He suggested that Jimoh was allegedly tortured to death in detention due to an existing deal between him and the yet-to-be-identified creditor.
The state police command on Sunday confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun.
She said: “The state police command is aware of an unfortunate incident that led to the tragic death of one Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri, which occurred on December 20.
“The deceased was invited on an alleged case of obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N220,000.
“Discreet investigation into the incident has commenced to ascertain the cause, and further developments on the outcome will be communicated as it progresses. No stone will be left unturned,” she assured.
