Plateau State Police Command has arrested 21 suspected cultists and two individuals for spreading fake news on social media capable of inciting chaos in the state.

The Command assured the public that the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.

The spokesperson for the Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Alfred Alabo, said that the arrest followed directives from the state’s Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, to all Area Commanders, Division Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders to heighten patrol and raid operations in their areas of responsibility.

He said: “The Command arrested a social media fake news peddler and 21 suspected members of Sara-Suka,’ a dangerous cult syndicate notorious for terrorising innocent citizens within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

“The Command is pleased to announce that the originator and owner of the Time Too account, Mohammed Shaibu Adam, 16, and his accomplice, Auwal Ilyas Abdullahi, 19, both of Rikkos in Jos, have been arrested.

“The suspects confessed to the crime. They would be charged to court after investigations at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).”

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police has commended the efforts of the officers who worked tirelessly to make the arrest possible, and encouraged them to ensure the safety of Plateau residents and flush out all criminal elements.
