The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two persons over their alleged involvement in the April 13, 2025 attack on military and police operatives at a checkpoint in Enugwu-Agu Village, Oba Ofemili, located in Awka North Local Government Area.
The Guardian reports that an Army operational vehicle was destroyed during the incident, prompting a joint investigation by security forces.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the arrests were made on June 2 following a continued investigation by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.
“Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu, in a diligent follow-up of investigation over an attack on police and military operatives that recorded the burning of an Army operational vehicle in Enugwu-Agu Village, Oba Ofemili, Awka North LGA, at about 9.45 am on June 2, 2025, arrested two suspects positively identified in the disturbing incident,” Ikenga stated.
The suspects, identified as Uche Egwu, 35, and Jindo Onyeka, 32, reportedly confessed to participating in the attack and provided information that could lead to the apprehension of others involved.
According to the police, the incident involved armed individuals who, without provocation, targeted both security operatives and community stakeholders during the April operation.
Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu condemned the attack, describing it as more than just an assault on personnel. “It is a deliberate act to test the will of the security agencies and an attack on the soul of a nation,” he said.
The Commissioner praised the operatives for their professionalism and restraint during the confrontation, noting that no lives were lost. He also directed investigators to broaden their efforts to identify and apprehend other suspects who remain at large.
Reaffirming the need for public cooperation, the CP called for a collective commitment to protecting those who serve to secure the country.
