A young couple, Mr Iliya Gyang, 30, and his pregnant wife, Mrs Grace Iliya, 25, have been killed in Angwan Ishaku, Barkin Ladi Local Council of Plateau State.
The couple was reportedly attacked by armed assailants on Wednesday evening, May 13, 2026; barely two days after Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited Barkin Ladi Local Government Area and held a town hall meeting with stakeholders on measures to end the killings in the area.
The attack also came a day after the State Security Council meeting where the Plateau State government announced decisive measures to address persistent attacks and destruction of farmlands across communities in the state.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), in a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, said the couple was attacked while working in front of their home.
According to the statement, Mrs Grace Iliya died at the scene, while her husband later succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack while receiving treatment at a hospital.
The attackers were said to have arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire on the couple and other residents in the area, and fled towards Fulani settlements in Fass along the Rakung-Sho Road.
The deceased woman had reportedly just finished breastfeeding their one-year-old twin boys and was pregnant again at the time of the attack.
The killing has left the twins orphaned and devastated members of the family and the community. Two other persons reportedly sustained gunshot injuries during the incident, although their conditions could not be immediately confirmed.
BYM expressed concern that the latest attack demonstrated continued defiance by the attackers despite ongoing efforts by government and stakeholders to restore peace in Plateau communities.
The association described the incident as wicked, inhuman, and a painful reminder of the worsening insecurity in Barkin Ladi and surrounding communities.
BYM called on the military and other security agencies to carry out coordinated operations and raids on settlements in Fass and Mahanga to flush out criminal elements and their collaborators allegedly hiding in the areas.
The group also urged the Plateau State government to provide immediate support for the orphaned twins left behind by the deceased couple, as well as extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength for them to bear the loss.
