FOR the residents of Langbasa Community in Eti-Osa Local Council of Lagos State, it is the beginning of a new dawn with the donation and commissioning of a storm-water drainage system in their area by the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

The project, estimated at about N2.2million, was the response of the church to the outcry of the community, which has long suffered uncontrolled flooding with the associated health and environmental consequences.

The community had solicited the help of the church in combating the menace posed by the perennial flooding of the area. This challenge was promptly taken up as a social responsibility initiative by the RCCG Lagos Province 23, Region 19 and, in particular, members of the RCCG, Prince of Peace Parish, Area 25 Headquarters located along Ado–Badore Road, Ajah, Lekki, Lagos.

Pastor-In-Charge of Province, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 23, Gbagada, Pastor Brown Oyitso, who represented the General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor E. A. Adeboye at the commissioning last week, commended the community for their co-operation in identifying the project as a core need and also for their co-operation which ensured the positive and speedy completion of the Storm-water Drainage System. He assured the community of continuous support from the Church, promising to look into other areas of their needs starting with potable water supply, which will be given priority attention.

He noted that prior to RCCG intervention, the major issue that had plagued the community was annual flooding of their houses and shops for many months during the overflow of nearby lakes occasioned by the rainy season.

“To complicate their predicament, the floods facilitated the carriage and dumping of refuse and waterborne germs into residences and shops of the community. Residents were also exposed to reptiles and marine organisms. Children and pedestrians were faced with a great deal of inconvenience and dangers when maneuvering through the deep areas of the flood.”

“Flooding of the major road leading into the Langbasa Community damaged vehicles, tri-cycles and motorcycles thereby imparting on cost of repairs. Furthermore, the flood caused damages to buildings, shops and furniture. People had to bear the added stench caused by the dirt and murky water”, he said.

Oyitso, supported by Ade Omokorede, Assistant Pastor in charge of LP 23, CSR Projects, Assistant Pastor Foluso Koku, the Pastor in charge of RCCG Area 25, LP 23 and Samira Fadlallah, the HOD, CSR projects of Prince of Peace Parish, said the first heavy rains this year, proved that the Drainage System works and that it is a good solution to the key issues that the community faced.

According to him, the church ensured that community folks partook in the execution of the project as subcontractors and workers thereby enabling them to earn some income while the project does not only impact positively on Langbasa Community, it was reported by its residents that the solution provided by the project has provided a preferred alternative route for road users of the adjoining Harmony Estate to bypass flooded roads to their residences by going through the now passable Langbasa road.

An elated Baale of Langbasa, Chief Fatai Adeboye Pelujo, was full of praises for the RCCG for coming to the aid of his people.
