Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has paid the medical bill of Miss Elizabeth Obi, a 22-year-old accident victim currently receiving treatment at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Irrua, Edo State.
The governor’s gesture was conveyed yesterday by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, who led a government delegation to visit the victim. Iyamu pledged the support of the government for Obi and confirmed that her hospital bill had been settled.
Obi, a final-year student, was hit by a truck belonging to a popular conglomerate on September 7, 2024, along the Auchi axis of the Benin–Auchi Express Road. She was admitted to ISTH on September 11, 2024, for treatment. Her case gained public attention after it was amplified on social media by an advocate known as Verydarkman (VDM).
Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of ISTH, Dr Obagaye Olakunle Michael, said Obi had spent some time in the intensive care unit and was responding to treatment. He explained that she requires a laser surgery to correct an obstruction in her airway; a procedure that can only be performed in Kaduna, as ISTH lacks the necessary equipment.
Speaking during the visit, Iyamu said Governor Okpebholo, moved by Obi’s story, had reiterated his commitment to support her and other Edo students in achieving their dreams.
“Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken full responsibility for the victim’s medical expense which has delayed further progress, as her parents lack the financial capacity to bear it.
The administration is committed to the well-being of the citizens, especially in times of distress,” he added.
