Restriction order: LASTMA impounds 10 articulated vehicles

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 10 articulated vehicles for violating the restriction order on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Articulated vehicles have been prohibited, temporarily, from using the bridge by the state government to safeguard the infrastructure.

The spokesperson for LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, stated that the impoundment was not punitive but aimed at protecting public infrastructure by regulating traffic flow.

He quoted the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who emphasised the importance of upholding traffic ordinances and safeguarding infrastructure.

Giwa had explained that despite stakeholders’ engagement and public sensitisation, some operators continue to violate the restrictions.

The Third Mainland Bridge, which is a critical link between the Mainland and the Island, has underdone series of rehabilitation and still not looking healthy.

To ensure compliance to the restriction, high-definition speed enforcement cameras have been installed to monitor traffic and deter violations.

The movement of articulated trucks and similar heavy vehicles across certain bridges, especially during peak hours, is prohibited to prevent structural strain, and reduce accidents.

Stakeholders in the logistics and freight sectors have been urged to comply with regulations to avoid penalties.

“LASTMA has intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with regulations. Cooperation from the public, especially in the haulage industry, is essential for the success of this initiative.

“These traffic reforms aligned with the state government’s THEMES+ policy, focusing on various expects of governance for the collective well-being of Lagosians,” Giwa added.
