Rivers State Police Command

The Rivers State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Oyigbo Division following allegations that he extorted N500,000 from a resident, as authorities commence an investigation into the matter.

The Command announced the decision in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, who said the officer had been relieved of his position pending the outcome of a thorough and impartial probe.

The development follows reports circulated on various online platforms in which activists accused the Oyigbo DPO of collecting N500,000 from a man under questionable circumstances.

The allegations generated public concern and renewed calls for accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

Reacting to the reports, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, directed an immediate investigation into the claims and ordered the officer’s removal from office to ensure a transparent process.

According to the Command, the action underscores its commitment to transparency, accountability and professionalism in handling allegations of misconduct involving its personnel.

“The officer concerned has been immediately removed from his position pending the outcome of a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter,” the statement said.

CP Adepoju expressed displeasure over the incident, stressing that the Command would not condone any form of misconduct, abuse of office or actions capable of eroding public trust and confidence in the police.

He assured residents of Rivers State that the investigation would be conducted diligently, professionally and without bias, adding that anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with established disciplinary procedures and the law.

The police commissioner further reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, discipline and quality service delivery across all formations in the state.

The Command also commended members of the public for drawing attention to the allegation and encouraged citizens to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through appropriate channels, assuring that all complaints would receive due attention.
