A suspected kidnap kingpin, identified as Abubakar Usman, has been arrested following a gun battle between security operatives and an alleged kidnapping gang in Delta State after the rescue of a woman abducted for a ₦100 million ransom.
The suspect was arrested during a coordinated operation launched after Mrs Blessing Chiedu, an indigene of Umunede Kingdom, was kidnapped on July 2, 2026, along Ani-Ifekide Farm Road in Ubulu-Uku, Delta State.
According to security sources, the abductors demanded a ₦100 million ransom from her family.
The Guardian learnt on Thursday that intelligence on the abduction was immediately relayed to the Delta State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Asaba, led by CSP Osakpolor, prompting the swift deployment of operatives.
The operation was supported by the Hydra Tech Surveillance System, which tracked the suspects’ movements and helped security personnel locate the victim before she could be moved to another hideout.
Mrs Chiedu was rescued alive and unharmed along the Ubulu-Unor/Ashama Road, in what security sources described as a significant breakthrough against kidnapping syndicates operating in parts of the state.
Following the rescue, operatives launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects. The pursuit reportedly continued overnight until about 6:45 a.m., when surveillance technology traced the gang to its hideout in the Ogwashi-Uku/Adonta Forest.
A gun battle followed as security operatives engaged the suspected kidnappers. During the exchange, Abubakar Usman, described by security sources as one of the area’s most wanted suspected kidnap kingpins, was arrested.
Other members of the gang reportedly escaped deeper into the forest with their weapons, and security agencies have launched a manhunt to apprehend them.
Investigators believe the gang is linked to a string of kidnappings across Igbodo, Umunede, Ubulu-Uku and neighbouring communities, where victims’ families were allegedly forced to pay millions of naira in ransom.
Security sources said the suspect’s arrest could provide investigators with valuable intelligence to dismantle one of the kidnapping networks operating across Delta North.
Some residents commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Yemi Oyeniyi, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad led by CSP Osakpolor and DSP Paul Xdot for what they described as a swift, intelligence-led operation that secured the victim’s rescue and led to the arrest of the suspect.
When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, did not respond to calls seeking confirmation of the operation as of the time of filing this report.
