Spare parts dealer sentenced to nine months for false publication

Arrested in jail

A Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court in Bode Thomas, Surulere, has sentenced 56-year-old spare parts dealer Fredrick Mmegwa to nine months imprisonment for conspiracy and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Mmegwa, a trader at the United Allied Spare Parts Dealers Association, Trade Fair Complex, Badagry Expressway, was convicted on three counts by Magistrate Phillip Ojo, who found him guilty of the charges.

The trader was first arraigned in 2017 by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, in a case numbered A/197/2017.

Prosecutor Morufu Animashaun informed the court that Mmegwa and others, still at large, conspired on November 17, 2016 to commit illegal acts at the United Allied Spare Parts Dealers Association, Trade Fair Complex.

The court was told that Mmegwa had falsely published in The Guardian that certain individuals were the new executive officers of the association. His actions contravened sections 409, 411(1), and 57(b) of the Lagos State Criminal Code Law, 2011.

The prosecution presented three witnesses and several documents, which were admitted as evidence.

After a failed appeal at the Lagos State High Court, Mmegwa was sentenced to three months for each count, alongside a N90,000 fine. He was also ordered to perform two weeks of community service.
