The founder of Volunteer Hub Africa, Chinenye Adeleye, has called on stakeholders to prioritise the emotional and psychological well-being of boys, particularly those in correctional facilities.
Speaking at the Oregun Boys Correctional Centre in Lagos, Adeleye highlighted the need to reshape the mindset of boys and prepare them for future societal roles.
She emphasised that the International Day of the Boy Child, observed yearly on May 16, serves as a reminder of the responsibilities boys will assume as future husbands, fathers, and leaders.
“They need to know that they are very important people in society, not just in relation to crime or juvenile issues, but as responsible individuals, especially within the home,” she stated.
Adeleye pointed out that many boys face significant mental health challenges, including trauma from domestic violence and sexual abuse, but often remain silent out of fear and shame. “Most boys are going through a lot, but they don’t have the courage to speak up because they fear being judged,” she said.
She urged parents, teachers, and guardians to be more intentional in guiding boys and providing the support structures needed to help them find purpose and direction in life. “When we build boys, we secure communities,” she added.
