Student dies, two injured during sign-out celebrations in Enugu
• NANS bans wild celebrations on campus
A female student tragically lost her life in a car crash at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu during celebrations marking the end of their final year examinations.
An eyewitness reported that a graduating student, driving recklessly, lost control of their vehicle, ploughing into a crowd of students.
The incident occurred despite warnings from management against excessive celebrations.
The car struck several students, fatally injuring one and seriously wounding two others, who were rushed to a private medical facility in Enugu for treatment.
Disturbing footage of the accident scene has circulated on social media, showing students lifting the car to recover the body of the victim trapped underneath.
Acting Rector of IMT, Dr Chukwuemeka Ejim, confirmed the incident and stated that the deceased was not an IMT student but a visitor from a neighbouring institution who was on campus celebrating with friends.
He also confirmed that two IMT students from the Public Administration Department sustained injuries in the crash. One of the injured, an HND II student, has been transferred to the Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu for further treatment after a leg fracture.
Ejim expressed his deep regret over the incident, stating that it could have been avoided had students adhered to the directives against reckless behaviour.
As a result of the tragedy, he announced the indefinite suspension of final-year examinations.
In response, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) banned the use of vehicles and other dangerous celebrations in all tertiary institutions in Enugu State.
NANS extended its condolences to the deceased’s family and friends and commended the Acting Rector for his swift response.
The organisation also confirmed that the driver responsible for the accident has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
