ABOUT two persons were feared killed by rival cult groups in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Council of Rivers State.

The groups were said to be fighting over control of the area, a source who pleaded anonymity said.

Ubima is the hometown of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi and erstwhile Governor Celestine Omehia, who governed the State for only six months when the Supreme Court sacked him.

The Guardian gathered that the fight which spilled over from Monday night till Tuesday, has put the area in a grip of serious tension thereby forcing residents to flee for safety.

The Chairman of the Local Council, Bestman Amadi, has confirmed the incident, disclosing that security operatives have been drafted to Ubima to restore peace and order.

He said: “The second detachment of security operatives are right now being drafted to Ubima community to quell the situation. The first detachment of armed security personnel was drafted yesterday night.”

“We are about returning to Ubima with the second enforcement of security operatives to make sure the rival cultists are effectively subdued and disarmed.”

Amadi added: “We need peace in Ubima and Rivers State. There is nothing to gain if we continue to kill ourselves the way these young men are doing now. Rather than come together to join hands in developing the community, our youths are busy engaging themselves in unproductive skirmishes.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Ahmed Mohammed could not be reached for confirmation as his phones were switched off and text messages sent to him were not replied.
