TWELVE persons were yesterday appointed to serve in the urban renewal committee, as Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi moves to modernise the university town of Nsukka.

This is as the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Prof. Godfrey Onah, warned against the antics of deceitful hangers-on, urging the governor not to lose his trademark humility.

Speaking when he received the clergy, the laity and the Diaspora of the diocese, Ugwuanyi said the Nsukka urban renewal committee is to help achieve his promises in that regards, adding that the town deserves a facelift to bring it in tandem with modern university towns.

The committee, headed by renowned architect and former commissioner for works in the state, Chris Ofor, comprises surveyors and engineers, the two members representing Nsukka council in the state Assembly and the director of lands, who would serve as the secretary.

Ugwuanyi told the delegation that government has commenced work on other sources of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to stem the economic downturn occasioned by the glut in the oil industry.

He expressed happiness that the bishop’s delegation comprised representatives of all key groups and segments of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka. He noted that the visit has given his administration a huge moral boost, and that he would strive to deliver good governance as a payback for their support.

However, the bishop advised him: “Do not be deceived by the paraphernalia of office around you. We are aware of your vulnerability. You are like a sheep in the midst of hungry wolves. Do not be afraid, as God who started this work with you will bring it to conclusion.”
